Ce cours a pour but de présenter les notions générales de toxicologie et de pharmacologie, notamment le devenir des substances dans l’organisme et leur interaction avec celui-ci. Différents mécanismes de toxicité seront présentés. Le cours est illustré par des exemples provenant des différentes disciplines de la toxicologie. L’aspect analytique sera également abordé, en particulier pour mentionner les liens avec les autres cours proposés par le ccCTA. 

The 2nd German Pharm-Tox Summit is a joint meeting of the 83rd Annual Meeting of the German Society for Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (DGPT) and the 19th Annual Meeting of the Association of Clinical Pharmacology (VKliPha). For further information see flyer.

This course provides a broad overview on the organ systems of interest as well as standard tests to investigate drug effects on these systems. Each organ system will be introduced before detailed information on the safety pharmacology aspects is provided. Integration of Safety Pharmacology findings in an overall risk assessment will be demonstrated. Concordance data and case reports will provide the evidence how meaningful pre-clinical data are for the clinical situation.

Drug development and production underlies laws and regulations to secure protection of human, test animals and the environment. Guidelines provide advice to applicants on specific scientific issues reflecting a harmonized EU approach to fulfil the pharmaceutical legislation. This course will provide participants with a comprehensive overview of the required in vitro and in vivo nonclinical studies, strategies for the development and risk assessment of new pharmaceuticals. Our progressive understanding of mechanisms involved in acute and chronic liver diseases has led to important improvements in the current management of these diseases. Basic research in the field of liver- development, cancer, viral infections, fibrosis, and regeneration is important to warrant further insight into the molecular and cellular processes implicated in order to develop novel detection methods and therapies. This meeting will bring together international scientists working in the field of liver disease. The meeting will provide a unique opportunity to get updated on and discuss new studies in the field of basic liver research.

In vitro toxicity methods are gaining importance, in particular as a response to a number of European legislative changes which call for more mechanistically-based decision-making and limit or even prohibit the use of animal experimentation for risk assessment purposes. Hence, there is an urgent demand for toxicologists and risk assessors to implement in vitro testing results into regulatory safety evaluation of chemicals. This course aims at meeting this ubiquitous need by training individuals who wish to start or pursue a career in this direction or to gain an update on the state-of-the-art of applied in vitro toxicology.

Traditional toxicology testing whereby experimental animals are exposed to chemicals for different periods of time with observation of effects on clinical, behavioral and pathological endpoints may not be sufficient anymore to serve future scientific and regulatory needs. There is a need for a better understanding of mechanisms of toxicity in experimental animal species and their relevance to man. An adverse outcome pathway (AOP) is a conceptual framework based on existing knowledge that relates exposure to a toxic substance to subsequent molecular and cellular changes that result in illness or injury to an individual or a population. Once a (molecular or cellular) mechanism of an apical endpoint of toxicity is understood and a reliable screening method for this mechanism is developed, chemicals can be screened for this type of toxicity. It is the intention of this annual BelTox congress to bring their audience from Belgium and abroad up to speed with these new concepts in the safety assessment of chemicals.
